One of a selection of portraits of urban life, by Moriz Jung, The Chess Players is a portrait of two men playing chess on a table by the café's window, with three men watching the game and taking notes from the outside. At the beginning of the 20th century, Vienna and its cafés were important for developing chess as a game and a sport. Players would gather in such establishments and play in front of crowds. Some chess players would even travel from North America to participate in such events.
